Guns and Ammo: The Run Has Begun

There is a run on guns. It has been going on ever since the election. It is likely to continue. Americans sense that there will be controls on gun ownership. They want to own additional guns.

I think this is a wise decision. It is wise as an investment. It is wise as a way to take advantage of second amendment rights,while they still exist.

I am a defender of second amendment rights. I have known H. L. "Bill" Richardson, who founded Gun Owners of America, since about 1967. I have known Larry Pratt, the head of GOA, since 1969. I have worked with both on various projects. I support GOA and its goals.

I think every person ought to own a large-caliber handgun, and every family should own a 12-gauge shotgun. It's a good idea to own a 30.06 rifle or its equivalent. My portfolio is explained by this poem.

  You don't need any more

The main uses of these weapons is personal defense against violent criminals. The defense of body and home is crucial for liberty.

People should be trained by a professional or skilled amateur in how to use these weapons. My father taught me the rifle as a boy. Jeff Cooper taught me the .45 pistol at Gunsite.

Women should get training in the use of a pistol. They should carry one. If the state requires that a woman be licensed, she should get licensed. If the state puts limits on this, women should organize politically to get the law changed.

I recommend against getting involved in weekend play-pretend paramilitary organizations. These are sitting ducks for agents provocateurs and men without good judgment. Using arms against the civil government without being deputized by the local sheriff is a form of revolution. It is not authorized by the Constitution or the Bible. It is also futile. If the state wants to get you, it can.

There was a militia in 1900. It was absorbed into the National Guard, which in turn was placed under the U.S. Army. This was done by lawyer Elihu Root in Teddy Roosevelt's day. He served as McKinley's and Roosevelt's Secretary of War. He also served as Roosevelt's Secretary of State. He is generally regarded as the original chairman of the American Establishment, an unofficial position.

When society breaks down, crime will grow. The modern state can no longer defends its citizens from armed predators. Politicians are more interested in restricting gun ownership than defending citizens. Welfare costs and boondoggles are absorbing money that should be spent on the police.

Families and neighborhoods need to prepare for gang violence and criminal invasion. Few neighborhoods do this in urban areas. There are few neighborhood watches. If there isn't one in your neighborhood, organize one. Work with the local police. Bring in a policeman to instruct members on what the law allows. To arm yourself and fail to create a neighborhood watch is Lone Ranger stuff. Safety is based on community action.

The correct strategy is to make your neighborhood expensive for criminals. They will move to greener pastures. The strategy is to increase the odds in your favor.

If you want to get the police into your neighborhood faster, set up a neighborhood night patrol. Patrol the streets at night. Use cell phones to alert the police if you see something suspicious. This strategy works in high-crime urban neighborhoods, which become lower-crime neighborhoods.

These are simple steps. If you live in a neighborhood where no one will take these steps when they have been challenged to do so is a bad sign.
